  • This is as opposed to "Bag Mask Ventilation"
    • the same reservoir bag is used in FMV / ETT / LMA hand-ventilation also
  • neonates
    • open mouth = push mandible caudally with facemask, then place FM on
      • this is because they have no teeth
      • molars are needed to splint airway open parallelly and lift tongue away
    • keep fingers on left hand gentle, do not dig into submandibular tissue
    • use fingers on left hand to push neck tissue cranially to improve seal
    • move hand proximally on reservoir bag so ⬇tidal volume delivered
      • but ensure ADEQUATE volume delivered
    • often over-vigorous FM holding is the problem
      • submandibular tissue pressure
      • closed mouth
      • often all you need is one finger on chin to lift and 1 thumb on FM
    • gather up submandibular tissue upwards towards chin
      • this will help lift tongue out of the way
      • tongue control is the key goal
