- This is as opposed to "Bag Mask Ventilation"
- the same reservoir bag is used in FMV / ETT / LMA hand-ventilation also
- neonates
- open mouth = push mandible caudally with facemask, then place FM on
- this is because they have no teeth
- molars are needed to splint airway open parallelly and lift tongue away
- keep fingers on left hand gentle, do not dig into submandibular tissue
- use fingers on left hand to push neck tissue cranially to improve seal
- move hand proximally on reservoir bag so ⬇tidal volume delivered
- but ensure ADEQUATE volume delivered
- often over-vigorous FM holding is the problem
- submandibular tissue pressure
- closed mouth
- often all you need is one finger on chin to lift and 1 thumb on FM
- gather up submandibular tissue upwards towards chin
- this will help lift tongue out of the way
- tongue control is the key goal
- open mouth = push mandible caudally with facemask, then place FM on
